Time Management Seminars - How to Stay Focused When Working From Home
Nowadays it can be quite a challenge to become productive, with so many things in one's plate, from children to work, email, physical mail, household to run, and all the time that one can waste in traffic and just waking up without a plan.
Having had some unproductive months myself I decided to really stop and think what I could do to become more productive:
One issue I finally came to terms with I to plan my day the previous night. If I do not plan my day I achieve nothing.
Years ago when I was at school, I was quite good at planning my day. I came home, wrote a list of subjects I needed to do homework for and did them one by one, without thinking of anything else. Once I was finished I did other things.
The problem this day is that we have so many things to keep up with, that in my case my mind shifts from one thing to the other one, and at the end of the day I have achieved very little. So this is what I came with, and although I have heard all of these before, until I set my mind to write it down and apply it, it did not really benefit me.
1- Plan the day the previous night. Write down what you need to achieve the following day. Once you write it down, prioritize it, and then allocate some time to it and stick to it. This planning should include your every day routine items, like getting ready, driving kids to school, meal preparations and shopping.
2- When planning your work, make sure you put it clearly; For example specify all items you expect to achieve, like write this article (half an hour), prospect clients (an hour), and work on your website (2 hours). This time should not include your coffee breaks. or time to check emails.
3- Use the time allocated to work, only to work. Do not to pay bills, answer phone calls or attend to unforeseen issues.
4- During the planning, plan some time for emergencies, and unforeseen issues to resolve.
5- Before going to sleep organize your desk for the following day. A clean desk and clean room will let you think clearer. This has been a big issue for me. I can acknowledge that a clean and tidy room contribute to a more productive day.
6- When you get up, have a set routine to organize yourself, shower, dress up, eat breakfast, send kids to school or anything else you might need to do. If you have kids, please make them aware of the routine. Everyone has to have a routine.
7- Remember to plan some breaks for coffee, and for lunch. Unless an emergency comes up or a deadline appears, do not plan to work late at night.
8- Avoid answering calls unless they are pertinent to your work.
This is what I have put in practice and my productivity has dramatically increased. Also my head is much clearer to think better.
So if you want to make 2011 a more productive year, consider following these tips, or create your own tips. Do not do it later, Do it now. Remember if you do not change something, you will get the same results.
