Tips from Time Management Workshops - What About Lifelong Time Mastery?
What's the difference between managing your time and mastering it? Managing is ongoing, while mastery can last forever. I have no doubt you want something that sticks. There's nothing more depressing than thinking you've done something well, really well, only to revisit it again, and again. Time management as a symptom and mastery as a system. Once you put a system in place, it should run, with very little looking after, like a well oiled machine.
Put a System In Place
Creating a system is simple. It's a set of rules you live by. How much free time do you want? How much time do you need for family? for you? What are your non-negotiables? No work past 6pm? No weekends? When you put a system in place, you become a master of your time. In essence, you beat your own drum.
I have this personal tradition of not answering the phone while I'm watching a movie. Why? I want to see the movie. My family jumps when it rings and of course, I ignore it. They know my system for movie watching. No interruptions.
What works for you?
Take time to consider what really matters to you. If you want to nap on Saturday and sleep late on Sunday, don't schedule activities that would take that away. Be present in every decision. Be aware and proactive. Always think before you do. Create your plan and practice living it.
One decision at a time. One day at a time.
