Time Management:
Time Management Workshop - Is Multitasking Slowing Your Progress?
In 2009 Stanford University issued a study about the price multitaskers pay. This study concluded the multitasker's brain just can't do it. Even though they appear busy, they don't actually accomplish anything. They were neither good at multitasking nor were they good at the tasks they hustled between. In today's world we are constantly bombarded with information and focusing on what is important has become nearly impossible. Yet to have the career and life you dream of (and deserve) focusing is necessary. The ability to FOCUS is a precious possession that many take for granted. When done properly, FOCUS awakens the creative genius within and allows us to move ahead at a faster rate. When you decide to stop and focus on achieving the life you were meant to live, you discover your unique ability to make use of what you have to get what you want.
Living a life of purpose is important. Finding the best career fit is important. Engaging in rewarding and satisfying work, that is important. Only those who are diligent and focused can achieve these things. They alone can reap the rewards of a life of purpose. Steady attention and effort to your career calling is the best route to a satisfying life. But did you know there are other benefits to maintaining focus. Maybe these incentives will help you FOCUS on what's really important.
- Decreased stress. Our days are finite containers of time. Proper time management involves prioritizing and scheduling. The decision to use your time properly, requires patience and approaching your tasks in a systematic, organized manner. When done properly this reduces stress significantly. Impatience and hastiness are classic signs of a multitasker. Remaining focused on what you can do and control increases your sense of accomplishment and keeps you satisfied and content.
- Those who diligently move towards accomplishing a goal reap the benefits of their actions. They enjoy faster progress than their multitasking peers. Multitaskers tend to want progress but their actions do not achieve what they really want. They think they are doing more, but what are the results? Focusing on your goal often brings clarity to your plans resulting in an accelerated growth process. If you really want a better life then you must decide to maintain a singular focus to the exclusion of everything else.
- Focused people tend to be specialists. Specialists possess a deep reservoir of knowledge on a particular subject because they focused. This knowledge creates a potential for them to earn more than generalists. Developing the ability to maintain focus has the potential to increase your net worth. Consider any career path today and you will recognize those with highly specialized knowledge tend to earn more than the average Joe. To become a master at your career calling and earn more, learn to focus on what is important.
- Staying Focused on what you want, places you in a better position to accept opportunities that are beneficial to you and your personal agenda. Have you ever noticed a multitasker agreeing to everything because they were not paying attention. The end result is an over committed, over worked, stressed out individual. Wouldn't you rather be happy and be exactly where you want to be?
- When you are diligent with accomplishing what you were meant to do, an amazing side effect occurs. You serve as a model for others to follow. They are encouraged and motivated by your progress. Your circle of influence expands, not only because you are a "specialist" but because they want your secret. They want to know what you did to become stress free and satisfied. You can simply answer I focused.
The next time you are tempted to multitask, ask yourself this question: Is this really worth my future? Most people multitask their life away. Never stopping long enough to discover what they want, why they want it and what they could do to get it? Unsure of how to get started or where to begin?
