Time Management:
Time Management Skills for Those Between Jobs
We work to earn money, because we actually live in a material world. You can be at peace and happy and as loving as you want - but it won't pay the phone bill or buy food. But what happens when your job no longer serves you? If you lose your job or choose to leave your job, you suddenly find you've got way too much time on your hands.
Now what?
Time management is a strategy to effectively use the twenty four hours in the day, no matter how much spare time you have. While it seems that everyone around you has no free time, you've got far too much on your hands. What should you do with it?
The first step is to work out where you want to be next. Have you always dreamed of being a helicopter pilot but were stuck in a 9-5 rat race job? What's stopping you from becoming that pilot? When you sit down and do the maths, you'll find that becoming a helicopter pilot is probably cheaper than doing a course at university. You have the time to do it now!
If you want to be employed full time again, look for another job. Make it a full time effort. Get on the internet every morning, apply for anything that catches your eye, look around for short courses you can do or volunteer work to keep you busy and out of the house a day or two a week. (This also looks great on a resume: instead of being unemployed for six months, you did volunteer work). Print off a handful of CVs and head off to your local shopping centre; there's bound to be some vacancies listed in the shop windows.
If you've thrown in your job to concentrate on something else (let's say, internet business) then start treating it like a job from the first day.
7.00 Wake up, shower, dress etc.
7.30 Exercise: walk, jog, play with dog.
8.00 Breakfast
8.30 Respond to emails, calls, offers etc.
12.00 Lunch
1.00 Marketing
3.00 Trip to post office to post goods, collect mail etc
4.30 Finish for the day.
Even though the above is just a guide, you can see how keeping to the same routine every day can help you not only get into the mindset of having a job, but also stops you from procrastinating, using the internet for other reasons (such as social network sites; unless they're part of your marketing strategy), and keeps you focused on using your time effectively.
Of course, you can have more than one time management strategy. You may wish to dedicate three days a week to a home-based business and two days to casual or volunteer work outside the home. You may wish to concentrate on home duties two days a week and casual work three days. Whatever you decide is completely up to you. In this day and age, it's easy to achieve your dreams, take care of your family, have the business (or job) you want, and be happy.
