Time Management:
Time Management Skills - Five Strategies to Find More Time
1. Become more efficient
A lot of time is used each day if you do your tasks very inefficiently. When you start to monitor how you spend your day in minute detail you may begin to realise how much time and energy is wasted either by repeating things, doing jobs at different times of day even though they would naturally go together or spending time walking across the room to put things away or file them. Be creative and discover more effective ways to do things.
2. Take a regular break
If you do the same activity all day long your body and your mind become tired and work less efficiently. You can energise yourself by setting yourself a time to go away from your desk and do something more active for five or ten minutes. On the other hand if your main task is very physical then spend the break time sitting quietly, reading or just closing your eyes and relaxing. You could plan to do this every hour to wake up your brain and your body.
3. Work to a deadline
Knowing a precise date or time by when you have to finish a task is highly effective in enabling you to get things done when you know by when you have to complete something you'll be far more efficient at getting it done. When you are working for someone else the deadline will probably be imposed on you. However if you work for yourself it's much easier to procrastinate and not get things done. So set your own deadline and keep reminding yourself that you have to get the task completed by that date.
4. Do the unpleasant tasks first
A natural tendency is to do those things you like doing first leaving the others until last. Have a go at reversing this and decide each day to do at least one task you've been putting off for ages. Get it out of the way quickly then you can enjoy the rest of the day doing what you enjoy doing.
5. Get help from others
Unlike delegating when you pass the whole task onto someone else sometimes you may just need some help to get going on those tasks which you've been putting off doing. A common reason for procrastination is not knowing how to do something so instead of being a martyr and doing everything yourself without help, find someone who is proficient in what you are trying to do.
