Time Management:
Time Management Class - Why To Do Lists Don't Work and How to Fix Them

For years, I was a compulsive to do list maker. Whether I was sitting bored in class, waiting in line at the grocery store, or waiting to cross an intersection, I would make a to do list for the day, the week, and so on.

Most of the time, I never finished everything on my list. Even when I did complete all my tasks, I was never really satisfied or happy. Most of the tasks were chores, things I had to do.

Then I started studying different time management systems and eventually figured out the problem when I stumbled across Tony Robbins' system.

Rather than starting off asking, "What do I have to do today?", he starts off by asking, What do I want in my life?"

This changes the focus of your to do list from the immediate demands being placed on you from the outside towards the goals and accomplishments you want to achieve and therefore actually motivated to do.

Then think about why you want to accomplish these goals. Why are they important? You don't need to categorize your reasons. Allow your mind to freely accept any and all reasons.

For example, let's say your goal is to lose ten pounds. Why is this your goal? You will be more fit, people will notice, you will feel more sexy, you will feel a sense of accomplishment, be a good role model for your family and friends, and so on. It's not important to find the best reason, but it is vital to have real reasons that connect to your emotions as to why you have these goals.

Finally, the practical step of what immediate actions can you take today towards accomplishing your goal? It doesn't have to be a giant step. All great things are achieved with consistent, daily effort. "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step".

By creating your To Do lists by beginning with your passionate goals, you are taking a proactive approach to time management. When you feel forced to do something, that you have to do these things then you will push off and forget your real goals.

So, let us go over the three steps again when creating your goals and to do lists.

First, think about what your long term goals are. Second, free associate why you want to accomplish these goals. Third, figure out at least one action step you can do today towards accomplishing your goal.

I started implementing this new method into my daily routine and find myself much more energized towards accomplishing my goals. Rather than feeling like I'm just going through the motions in order to no longer have to worry about these things, I feel happy that I'm making progress to my ideal future. I sincerely hope you try doing the same.
