Time Management Training: Do What a Camel Does to Get More Done in a Day!
Probably at one point or another you felt that the day was overwhelming, with not enough hours in the day to complete the giant list of things that were piling up. Camels don't have that problem. But chances are you don't know any camels first hand, and probably have never even met one. And I bet now you feel like a fool for not making any camel friends!
Luckily for you though, I came along. I know camels. Well.
Also, I formerly owned a very long 'to-do' page, nay, book! I often found it hard to juggle all the errands I had to run, with all the activities I wanted to do, with everything else in my life. I wanted to learn new languages, get in shape, and handle the day-to-day grind, but somehow there just wasn't enough time.
I'll point out again, that this is not a problem that camels have. In fact most of the time you see them peacefully relaxing; laying down on some sand dune, with their eyes half-closed. That's because they are following a doctrine to life that, if we incorporate in ours, would quadruple our efficiency!
Think, for example, of the way that a camel gathers water. In fact if you know anything about camels, you probably know that a camel drinks more water than it needs. That means that a camel reaches its goal of quenching thirst, gives you a smirk when you stop after quenching your thirst, AND CONTINUES TO DRINK MORE WATER! Sure some "experts" will tell you that the camel is collecting water for future consumption in one of its four stomachs, but we know that he's just doing that extra bit to spite you!
You, too, then,to get more done, should do that extra bit!
If you're learning another language; learn 2 more words that day. If you're learning a new musical instrument; practice one more melody or for 10 more minutes. If you're doing 20 sit-ups; do 2 more. If you are doing laundry; throw in one more load. If you're cooking dinner for a family event; make that extra dessert!
P.S. Camels love their desert (Get it? Of course you do! Because you're not a stupid camel; so on to the next step!)
When does a camel do the things it needs to do? IMMEDIATELY! When a camel gets a camel-urge, he just goes behind the nearest camel-bush and does his camel-business without delay!
So you, to get more done, must act without delay!
As in; do things NOW. Of the time we spend on a task, we spend most time looking for excuses to delay action. Humans are the only animals that procrastinate. However procrastination is a habit, and once you break it, you will have another habit in its place; one that forces you to act on the activity that entered your mind - and you'll get more done.
Camels naturally obey these doctrines, but before they can become second nature to us, we must first get the ball rolling by using our willpower. Luckily for you though, you have the internal strength of an elephant!
So on to action now. To get more done, pick something you have been meaning to do, large or small, and do it!
